Aflorar
2020
During Covid-19, we've had to isolate ourselves with the purpose of saving lives. This took us away from our daily routines to adapt to the situation from home, which in turn gave us the opportunity to find spaces for reflection on our connection with the surrounding nature. We have found value in every plant, fungus, and tree that surrounds us, which we usually take for granted but now feels like a blessing. This has allowed us to realize the resilience and adaptability of nature to survive in its environment.
Aflorar is a collection of bowls that symbolizes how nature manages to flourish in the midst of any adversity, seeking to inspire us to apply this to our lives. This collection is specifically inspired by fungi kingdom, organisms characterized by their resilience and ease of adaptation to survive in their environment, as well, by their beauty. Each piece seeks to represent the organic growth of these organisms to remind us that just as nature adapts and flourishes, we humans, being part of it, can also adapt to any adversity.

My role
During the lockdown of COVID-19, four other design students and I came together to create each, a piece for a collection influenced by what we were experiencing. The brief was clear, explore with ingredients that you can easily get or have at home (considering the lockdown) to create a bowl collection made with diy materials.

Then, together, we created a moodboard of what we wanted in order to guide our material exploration and our individual pieces of the collection. Finally we wrote a statement of who we are as a group of design students.

As designers in the modern world, we consider it important that our creations transcend beyond the visual and functional aspects to also have a positive impact on the environment. That's why we seek innovative solutions regarding materiality, aiming to ensure that our creations not only benefit us but also have a positive impact on nature. This is done so that what we develop becomes a means of reflection that adds value to what we often take for granted but is essential. This way we can contribute to our purpose as creators to generate greater environmental and social awareness.

In this phase of the project each team member had to explore individually. Here is my material evolution, exploring dehydrated squeezed lemon residues and later, mixing them with bioplastic made of corn starch flour, unflavored gelatin and glycerine. I wanted to use natural products that usually are considered as waste. I realized that instead of throwing away the lemons we squeezed everyday, i could use them to create a new material.

My first exploration was dehydrate lemons placed in a mold with a mix of glue and water. However it didn’t kept the shape of the bowl for so long.

Inspired by how some fungi grow on the trees, i wanted to explore bioplastics to agglutinate the lemons. Nevertheless, i didn’t knew how to make it 3D so i just covered a glass bottle with the bioplastic hoping to find a way to unmold it when it was dry. It didn’t worked.

Being aware of how moldable bioplastics can be, i experimented with pouring it on a flat surface to make a bioplastic film. When it dried a little bit, i began to explore how could i make it 3D by placing it on a paint bottle.

After understanding how to give it three-dimensionality, i made this sketch for the final product. I wanted to continue using lemon residue so I used the zest of the used lemon peel to create texture and the slices of it previously squeezed to encapsulate them and create an organic aesthetic.

For creating the final product, I had to overlap several layers of bioplastic. I found that there is no need for an adhesive to bond the layers if you do it before they dry completely. Also, I discovered that when I let them air dry on top of a vase, they began to generate folds that gave the sensation of being a natural organism, like a fungus or a lichen.
